Cross Country - Girls V/JV

Exeter cross country is one of the top programs in all of New England as they have collected NEPSTA championships in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021. The team is able to train right here on campus, often utilizing the well-groomed Academy trails for meets and practices.

Girls XC placed 2nd today out of 22 schools in the varsity race, with two runners in the top 15 and all five of our scoring runners in the top 41! Our runners were in tight packs, with uppers Tenley Nelson and Daria Ivanova running side by side up front, prep Sophie Shu followed closely by upper Annika Finelli and lower Melani Dowlings, and senior Sophia Green rounding out our varsity group. In the JV race, new lower Hawley Dick and prep Tiffany Sun placed 4th and 6th, followed by senior captain Lassiter Foregger in 15th. In the so-called freshman race, we placed 2nd, let by Willow Foregger in 40th place overall. Of runners placing for scoring teams, our runners placed 7,9,10,11,13, and 14. Girls Varsity won with three tight packs - 6th and 7th place, 14,15,16, and 19-21. Girls Varsity won with 55 points over Hanover (77) and Winnacunnet (85) while JV won with 35 points ahead of Hanover (45) and Coe-Brown (72). XC raced at Loomis today with Loomis, NMH, Hotchkiss and Taft. It was a phenomenal day for XC and a beautiful course. Exeter finished second out of the five schools, led by Tenley Nelson in second, followed by Melani Dowling, Sophie Zhu and Annika Finelli. JV also finished in second place today. Exeter raced St Paul’s School and Winsor School on a beautiful fall day in Concord, NH. A very strong runner from Winsor, Meg Madison, won the race , 90 seconds later came all five scoring Exeter runners in a row: Tenley Nelson, Melani Dowling, Kayla Hyett, Sophia Green and Hawley Dick, all finishing between 20 and 22 minutes. This impressive display came in spite of our #2, #3 and #5 runners being out with illness, and our race plan to run “tempo pace.” Several of our runners ran lifetime personal bests on this beautiful and rolling course. Exeter’s JV team likewise won the JV race over Winsor, 19 to 37.

Girls’ varsity won, Exeter 19 - Andover 40. Girls’ JV also won, Exeter 17 - Andover 44. Uppers Tenley Nelson and Daria Ivanova ran side by side at the front of the race throughout, with Tenley coming out on top after a strong sprint. Senior Sophia Green had a breakthrough race as Exeter’s third scorer in 4th. Lower Kayla Hyett was about 25 yards behind Andover’s second runner as they entered the finishing straight, and Kayla lifted into a sprint for the ages, passing the Andover runner just before the finish line. In the JV race, upper Andrea Nystedt continued her upward trajectory by winning the race, followed by teammates Tate Kelly and Phil Avilov. The two races ran combined but were scored separately.

Full Results The girls varsity cross country team enjoyed a great day of success and placed second overall. Tenley Nelson ’24 claimed third place overall with a time of 19::36. Daria Ivanova ‘24 (20:02) placed sixth while Annika Finelli ’24 (21:21) also earned All-New England status with a 16^th place finish. The girls JV program put together a dominant performance and earned their second straight JV championship. Hawley Dick ‘25 earned individual champion honors with a time of 22:14 while Emerson Seymour ‘26 (22:25), Tiffany Sun ’26 (22:28( and Leta Griffith ’24 (22:31) joined her in the top five.
