A Celebration of 55 Years of

the Afro-Latinx Exonian Society

Oct. 28 & 29, 2023
Phillips Exeter Academy

Since its founding in 1968, the Afro-Exonian Society — now the Afro-Latinx Exonian Society (A.L.E.S.) — has provided a place to support and share the culture and history of Black and Latinx students. For more than half a century, members of the A.L.E.S. have come together to learn about advocacy and how to transform their passion for issues into action.

On Saturday, Oct. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 29 we will recognize the history and impact of the A.L.E.S. on Phillips Exeter Academy. All are welcome to join us on campus as we celebrate this transformative organization which continues to provide opportunities for students to grow and support one another.

Dr. Emery Brown '74, one of the world's leading physician-scientists in the field of anesthesiology, and John Forte '93, a hip-hop music luminary, will be among the graduates returning to campus to help remember the club's founding and its impact on the institution over the past half-century.

Wole Coaxum ‘88 and Paulina Jerez ‘91 will serve as hosts of the celebration, which also is highlighted by an alumni panel discussion, A Conversation: Knowledge, Goodness, Truth and Justice, with panelists Mark McClain ’74, Jackie Hayes ’85, Claudia Cruz ’96, Leroy Sims ’97 and Veronica Juarez ’00. Moderated by Russell Weatherspoon.
